Biography:
Michael Stedman is a native of Lakewood, Ohio. He spent most of his childhood in Illinois and Nebraska where he developed a love of the natural world. He was a fiber and ceramics major at the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Florida and has continued to take workshops and classes in an effort to refine his means of self-expression.
Artist Statement:
My thinking and therefore my art is greatly influenced by the world around me as well as an imaginary world generated by a lifelong love of fantasy and science fiction.
I have always preferred the freedom of hand building with clay or hand weaving with fiber when I try to capture a mental image or an abstract feeling in my heart.
My work will always have “flaws”. It might be a fingerprint, an unintentional mark or an asymmetrical pattern. I find these imperfections impart uniqueness to each piece. Even though I’ll continue to refine my techniques, my goal is not to achieve perfection. My goal is to be able to use clay, fiber, glass or any combination of materials to capture a reflection of the energy that surrounds and is within all of us.
