For the last several months I have been making artwork dealing with the concept of “remnants” or what is left behind after something greater is gone. The images demonstrate that the way we know vanished cultures is through the things that remain. We may be reminded of the Lascaux cave paintings, for example, or the grand cathedrals of the Gothic period in Western Europe.

My work deals with subjects like the Holocaust, the war in Iraq, and the crisis in Darfur where entire cultures are either lost or dramatically changed. Images may portray gravestones in Prague, burnt out villages and settlements in Darfur, or destruction in Baghdad.

The scenes, rather than being purely realistic depictions, are suggestive but unclear, mysterious, and semi-abstract so that they become symbols of cultures that are altered by time and by mankind.
