Robert Hakes
Cleveland, GA
Robert (Bob) Hakes, a resident of Cleveland, GA, began his wood working career over 40 years ago while working as a carpenter in St. Petersburg, Florida. In the 1980’s he began building large wooden toys for collectors and for special orders. As a result of receiving a second-hand wood lathe from his wife for Father's Day, he began his wood turning career.
Bob's knowledge of wood properties, along with his creative talents, has enabled him to become a successful wood turner. Through his membership in The American Association of Woodturners he has attended seminars and workshops. Bob is a member of the Mountain Laurel Woodturners Club in Clarksville GA. Bob’s outstanding carpentry skills combined with his love for creating unique wood turnings make his works a one-of-a-kind design that will enhance any setting. Bob uses all natural GA hardwoods to create his functional bowls, platters, urns, and decorative wood vessels. He shows at numerous Georgia art festivals throughout the year and as a visiting artist at Unicoi State Park and Dahlonega Gold Museum.
Examples of Bob's skilled woodwork can be seen throughout his beautiful mountain home as well as in many collectors’ homes in Atlanta and the northeast Georgia mountains. Bob also has several of his works in individual's homes in Canada, Europe and Asia.
Most days find Bob enthusiastically working in his woodshop adjacent to the beautiful wood home he built in White County with his wife and daughter. Bob truly loves woodturning and frequently invites those interested to visit his shop to try their hand at turning. He also welcomes donations of wood and frequently gets requests to create a special piece to serve as a remembrance of a cherished tree.
When time permits, Bob also designs, creates and installs custom wood railings for cabin lofts & porches.
Works displayed and sold in art shows/festivals in northeast Georgia and the Atlanta area year-round. Contact the artist for a list of show dates.
