Sue Shapiro has been working with clay for over 30 years. She received a BFA in Ceramics from Massachusetts College of Art. Shortly after College Sue began to exhibit her work in Art Shows and Galleries throughout the United States.
Sue’s clay work offers a combination of sculpture with function. Each piece is constructed from terra cotta clay slabs. The design is incised in the clay and then glazes are applied with a paint brush. Sue’s clay work reflects her interest in architecture and symmetry. Her forms are decorated with geometric patterns inspired by both Art Deco Design and Native American Art.
In 1998 Sue and her husband Mike opened SHAPIRO’S Gallery in St. Petersburg, FL. Originally the Gallery was to showcase just Sue’s Pottery but before long work by additional Artists and Craftsmen were displayed. The Gallery today features work by over 300 American Artists and Craftsmen and has been awarded a “Top 25 Gallery Award” the past six years. In 2005 Sue & Mike opened their 2nd Gallery in the beautiful town of Sautee Nacoochee, GA. This Gallery features both local and national art and displays work by over 200 Artists and Craftsmen. “The Community in Georgia has been so receptive and supportive of our Gallery…we love it here, we’ve caught the “Sautee Spirit”!
Sue moved her clay studio to Sautee Nacoochee last spring into a wonderful building built by local craftsman Thomas Carr.
